from: Luggage Security Measures

Luggage Security Measures
By Keith Londrie

The key to travel safe is to travel light. If you are traveling light you can simply retain your luggage inside the cabin with you. Luggage security measures include putting your name and address inside each piece of baggage in the event tags are separated from your luggage. As an additional luggage security measure, use plastic or nylon filament duct tape to completely wrap your luggage to prevent it from opening accidentally when dropped by baggage handlers.

The most essential security measure includes resetting combination locks from factory "000" combination to your predilection. For suitcases with multi-combination locks, set the combinations on each lock to separate random digits. For briefcases having a single combination lock, set the lock on each piece of luggage with dissimilar combinations. Prevention is better than cure. This age-old adage makes abundant sense. If you're traveling overseas, plan to dress as inconspicuously and blend into the local environment where you will be visiting. This will make you appear as lessor of a target.

There are many stories of baggage theft, therefore avoid all appearances of wealth to minimize the risk. Consider leaving jewelry at home. Be aware that jewelry is an appealing target to thieves. Consider obtaining a modest amount of foreign currency before leaving home. This isn't a cruise. Why tempt fate. For short trips, avoid excess baggage and travel with a small handbag. Even though theft is not a frequent occurrence, you can significantly lessen potential threats enhancing luggage security, by traveling light and securely locking checked luggage. Since there is always a possibility that your luggage may get misplaced or lost, packing some clothes in your carryon or handbag exudes logic. I always have at least 1 complete change of clothes in my carry on luggage; and you should too. Lock those bags that you check thru to your destination.

Modern technology has taken luggage security one-step further. Take for instance, the baggage company Samsonite. It recently invented a Bluetooth-enabled carrying case, called the Hardlite 625. This incredible luggage features Radio-frequency identification (RFID) microchips. These chips store itinerary information, like flight arrival and departure times, which could be retrieved and displayed by other compatible devices. These luggage security gadgets notify the bag's owner if someone else tries to walk off with their baggage, and help reunite the bag with its owner if lost. These types of innovation are happening frequently and come to us as a great benefit.
